Yumi – Female Munchkin

 

She is affectionate, sweet and incredibly rewarding once she trusts you. Yumi absolutely loves adults and older children and can become very attached to her people. However, she is not a cat who will immediately settle into a new home and be everyone’s best friend. She needs time, patience and a family who is prepared to let her build trust at her own pace.

 

Yumi is best suited to being the only cat in the home.Yumi can be sensitive around other cats, particularly cats who are dominant or who make her feel that her food, space or resources aren’t secure.

 

In her foster home, she has struggled with her dominant foster brother. This has included resource guarding and urine marking furniture and bedding. While she may potentially coexist with another very calm, easy-going cat, we are looking for an only-cat home wherever possible. We don’t want to put Yumi (or another cat) into a situation where she feels she has to compete for space or resources. Yumi has also left a few scratches on her foster brother, although he is very much the type of cat who struggles to take the hint and leave her alone.

 

She is not suited to young children. Yumi can become defensive if she feels cornered, overwhelmed or if her boundaries aren’t respected. For this reason, she needs a home without children under 10. Older children who understand that a cat’s “no” means no could be a good match.

 

Yumi is not a cat who should be chased around for cuddles, picked up when she doesn’t want to be, or expected to tolerate behaviour that makes her uncomfortable. Her future family needs to be comfortable reading cat body language and giving her space when she asks for it.

 

But there is a lot to love about Yumi. Once Yumi feels safe, you see a completely different side of her. She is sweet, affectionate, loyal and full of personality. She has a great appetite, enjoys spending time with her people and loves supervised time outside in a secure catio.

 

Yumi really loves her food and treats, but because she is a Munchkin, it is important that she maintains a healthy weight. Extra weight puts additional strain on her short legs. Potential adopters should also be aware that Munchkins can be prone to arthritis as they get older, so maintaining a healthy weight and monitoring her mobility throughout her life will be important.

 

 

Yumi is happiest when she doesn’t have to compete with other cats. An only-cat home is strongly preferred.

 

She needs older, respectful children who understand boundaries and can give her space.

 

A quieter environment will help her feel secure and settle more quickly.

 

Yumi may take time to trust you. Her new family needs to be prepared for that and not expect instant affection.

 

She loves supervised outdoor time and would particularly enjoy a secure catio or enclosed outdoor space.

 

Yumi needs an adopter who will listen to her body language, respect her boundaries and understand that defensive behaviour is her way of communicating that she is uncomfortable.

 

Yumi is not the right cat for everyone, and that’s okay.She isn’t the best choice for someone looking for an easy-going cat who immediately settles into a busy household, happily lives with other cats and tolerates being handled whenever someone wants.

 

But if you’re looking for a cat with character, you’re happy to earn her trust rather than expect it, and you appreciate a cat who has a strong personality and knows exactly what she wants, Yumi could be a wonderful match.
